Our story

It started with a road trip

Two dog people from Norwalk, Iowa, one very good dog bar in Colorado, and a five-year detour from corporate life. Here's how Mo'Tail & Spaw came to be.

How we got here

Five years, one big idea

Most good ideas die on the drive home from vacation. This one didn't.

  1. 2018

    The spark

On a January trip to Colorado, Kyle and Megan Casey wandered into a dog-friendly bar and fell hard. Back home in Norwalk, Iowa, with two corporate jobs and a house full of dogs, nothing came close. So they decided to build it, only bigger.

  2. 2018–19

    The road trip

Before building anything, they did their homework. They loaded up the dogs and toured the best dog spots in six cities, taking notes on what worked, what didn't, and what could be safer and cleaner.

    • Denver
    • Kansas City
    • Dallas
    • Florida
    • Minneapolis
    • Seattle
  3. 2020

    The setback

Then COVID hit. The developer backing the project pulled out, and banks wouldn't touch an unproven idea. Instead of folding, they threw a pop-up in October 2020, and Des Moines dog people showed up in droves.

The pop-up proved it: Des Moines wanted this.

  4. 2022

    Doors open

In August 2022, Paws & Pints opened: 22,000 square feet and a $10 million playground for dogs and their people. Mo'Tail & Spaw opened inside, with daycare, lodging and grooming, strict entry rules and vaccine checks in the app.

  5. 2025

    Room to grow

Two years in, we'd outgrown the building. In July 2025 we added more lodging and daycare space for our 1,500+ members.
